Discord phone verification: why it is required, how to complete it and what to do if no code arrives
Why does Discord suddenly ask you to verify a phone number? Learn about server verification levels, what triggers verification, the process and what to do if no code arrives, plus what to keep in mind when using a virtual number.
Discord usually needs only an email to sign up, but when you join a server that requires phone verification, when your account is flagged by security checks or when you perform actions very frequently, it asks you to link a phone number and enter an SMS code. This guide explains why Discord asks for phone verification, how the process works, what to do if no code arrives, and how to protect your account after verifying with a virtual number.
Why verification is required
- Server requirements: some servers set a high verification level and only let members with a verified phone number send messages.
- Account security checks: new accounts, joining many servers quickly or unusual logins can trigger a request for phone verification.
- Number limits: one phone number can usually be linked to only one Discord account at a time.
What are server verification levels?
Discord server admins can set the conditions members must meet before they can chat, in several levels ranging from no restriction to requiring a verified phone. Lower levels only require a verified email, while the highest level requires the account to have a verified phone number. If you join a server and see a message saying you need to verify your phone to chat, you have hit the highest level; it has nothing to do with whether your account is unusual.
Verification steps
- Choose the country in the prompt and enter the number.
- Enter the code from the SMS and complete the CAPTCHA if asked.
- After verifying, turn on two-factor authentication in User Settings to reduce future security checks.
- Save your two-factor backup codes somewhere safe in case you lose your phone.
What if the code does not arrive?
If no SMS arrives after you submit the number, check these in order:
- Check the country code and number, and do not enter the country code or the leading 0 twice.
- Wait a minute or two before resending; frequent requests may be temporarily limited.
- If Discord says the number is invalid or unsupported, the number type was rejected, so switch numbers right away.
- If the code still does not arrive, cancel the order and try a country with plenty of stock.
Receiving a Discord code with a virtual number
Check available countries and prices on the Discord SMS page, and compare US numbers on the US virtual number page. Discord usually does not accept internet phone numbers, so you need a mobile number that can receive SMS. If you are not yet familiar with how temporary numbers work, read What is an SMS verification service? first.
When choosing a number, prefer countries with plenty of stock. One number can be linked to only one Discord account at a time, so if Discord says the number is already in use, simply switch to a new one.
Protecting your account after verification
A temporary number is recycled when it expires, and you will not be able to use it for Discord messages again. So that your account does not depend on that number, we recommend:
- Turn on two-factor authentication: use an authenticator app to generate login codes instead of relying on SMS.
- Save your backup codes: download them after enabling two-factor authentication so you can log in if you lose your phone.
- Make sure your email works: Discord’s login alerts and account recovery rely on email, so confirm it is verified and receiving mail.
Things to keep in mind
Once your phone is verified, Discord usually does not ask again very often. But if you change numbers later or the account is flagged again, you will need a number that can receive SMS. If you plan to keep the account long term, switch the phone number in settings to your own. Please follow Discord’s Terms of Service and Community Guidelines.
FAQ
Does Discord always require phone verification?
No. Regular use only requires a verified email; phone verification is needed only when a server requires it or the account is flagged by security checks.
How many Discord accounts can one number be linked to?
Only one at a time. To use the number on another account, you first need to remove it from the original one.
How long does the code take to arrive?
It usually arrives within a minute or two. If nothing arrives before the order expires, cancel the order and try a different number.
Why does Discord say the number is invalid?
Common reasons are an unsupported number type, such as an internet phone number, or a wrong country code. Switch to a mobile number that can receive SMS.
Can I remove the phone number after verifying?
You can remove it in User Settings, but afterwards servers that require phone verification may stop you from chatting again, and you will need to verify again if the account is flagged.
If you have trouble receiving codes, see the Help center, and please follow Discord’s Terms of Service.
