German numbers for SMS verification: which apps can you register with a German number?

· 3 min read

Which apps is a German +49 number good for? Learn the German mobile number format and how to enter it, common uses, how it compares with other EU numbers, and what to look out for when choosing a German virtual number.

German numbers are often used to register apps and online shops in the EU. German mobile numbers start with 015, 016 or 017; in international format you drop the leading 0, so the number starts with +49 15, +49 16 or +49 17. This guide covers the German number format, the apps people commonly register with German numbers, and what to keep in mind when choosing a German virtual number.

German number format

  • Country code: Germany’s country code is +49.
  • Mobile prefixes: domestically, German mobile numbers start with 015, 016 or 017, and after dropping the leading 0 they usually have 10 to 11 digits.
  • How to enter it: after selecting Germany in an app, enter only the digits without the 0, such as the part starting with 15 or 17, and do not add 0 or 49 again.

German mobile numbers do not all have the same length, so do not judge whether a number is wrong by whether it has exactly a certain number of digits; the key thing to check is whether you added the leading 0.

Apps commonly registered with German numbers

  • Messaging apps: Telegram, WhatsApp and similar apps are widely used in Germany, and a German number is a common choice for Europe.
  • Online shopping: for European marketplaces such as Amazon Germany, a local number makes order and security verification smoother.
  • EU services: some apps available only in the EU require a phone number from an EU country.

How to use it

  1. On the German virtual number page, choose the platform you want to verify.
  2. Enter the +49 number on the platform, making sure not to add the leading 0 again.
  3. Read the code on the order page; if it does not arrive in time, cancel the order and try another number.

Choosing a German virtual number

The German virtual number page lists German number prices for each platform; you can also go straight to the Telegram SMS page or the Amazon SMS page.

When choosing, first confirm that the platform you need has German stock. Stock of German numbers fluctuates on some platforms; if they are temporarily sold out, choose a number from another EU country or check back later.

What if a German number does not receive the code?

  • Check whether you added an extra leading 0 or typed 49 twice.
  • Wait for the countdown to finish before resending to avoid rate limits.
  • If the code still does not arrive, cancel the order and try another German number or another EU country.

German or another EU number?

If an app only asks for an “EU number”, Germany is not your only option: compare prices and stock in Germany, France, the Netherlands, Spain and other countries, and pick the best fit. If the app is aimed at users in Germany, or you will use it in Germany, a German number reduces extra verification caused by a region mismatch.

FAQ

Why do German mobile numbers have different lengths?

Germany’s mobile number ranges were allocated over a long period, so numbers in different ranges differ slightly in length. Just select the right country in the app and drop the leading 0; you do not need to worry about the length.

Can a German number register German banking or carrier services?

These services usually also require local identity or address details, so temporary numbers are not suitable for them.

What if German numbers are out of stock?

Choose a number from another EU country or check back later. Country pages that were available before are kept, so you can order directly once stock returns.

Can I keep the number long term?

No. A temporary number receives SMS only during the order’s validity period, so link an email or switch to your own number after verification.
