TikTok verification code not received? Common causes, what the messages mean and how to get a code
Not getting the SMS code when signing up for or logging in to TikTok? Learn the common causes such as "too many attempts" and what TikTok's messages mean, troubleshoot step by step, and receive a TikTok code with a virtual number.
TikTok sends SMS verification codes when you sign up, log in on a new device or change account details. If the code does not arrive, do not keep tapping send; working through the checks below in order is far more effective. This guide covers the most common causes, what TikTok’s various messages mean, and how to improve your chances when using a virtual number.
Common causes
- Too many attempts: if you request codes repeatedly in a short time, TikTok tells you to try again later and stops sending codes to that number.
- Region mismatch: a number from a country very different from your current network can trigger extra verification.
- Number already used: the number may already be linked to another TikTok account and cannot be used to register again.
- Wrong number format: the country code was entered twice, or the leading 0 used for domestic calls was kept.
Troubleshooting steps
- Check the number format and country code, and wait for the countdown to finish before resending.
- Turn off any VPN or proxy that changes your network location, and make sure the app is up to date.
- If the code still does not arrive, cancel the order and switch to a country with plenty of stock.
- After signing up, link an email address so you do not depend on SMS to log in later.
Understanding TikTok’s common messages
“Maximum number of attempts reached. Try again later.”
This is TikTok’s rate limit: the number or device has requested too many codes in a short time. Tapping again only makes the wait longer. Stop requesting, try again after a while, or simply switch to a new number.
The number is already registered
This means the number is already linked to a TikTok account. TikTok will guide you to log in to that existing account instead of creating a new one. If you want to register a new account, use a different number.
The code arrives but is reported as invalid
Codes expire, and only the most recently sent code is valid. If you tapped send several times, use the last code you received; if it has expired, request a new one.
Receiving a TikTok code with a virtual number
The TikTok SMS page lists prices and stock by country; US numbers can be viewed on the US virtual number page. When choosing a number, keep in mind:
- Stock first: countries with more stock offer more numbers, so it is easier to switch to a working one if a number is rejected.
- Consistent region: try to match the number’s country with your network region and app language to reduce extra checks.
- One account at a time: do not register several accounts in a row on the same device and network; that triggers security checks more easily than the number itself.
If you are not yet familiar with how temporary numbers work, read What is an SMS verification service? first.
Protecting your account after signing up
A temporary number is recycled when it expires, and after that you will not be able to receive TikTok’s codes on it. Right after signing up, we recommend:
- Link an email address: add an email in your account settings and set a password so you can log in with email later.
- Turn on 2-step verification: enable it in the security settings and choose a method you can use long term.
- Keep a regular device: stay logged in on the same device where possible; switching devices often makes re-verification more likely.
Asked to verify again after changing device or network
TikTok judges whether an account is safe based on the device and network you log in from. When you log in on a new phone, reinstall the app or your network region suddenly changes, you may be asked to receive an SMS code again. If the account is linked only to a temporary number, you will not be able to complete that verification.
In that case, choose to log in with your email or password on the login page; if you turned on 2-step verification earlier, complete it with the method you set up then. Sticking to one or two devices also reduces how often you are asked to verify again.
FAQ
How long does a TikTok code usually take?
It normally arrives within a minute or two. If nothing has arrived when the countdown ends, waiting longer rarely helps; work through the steps above or switch numbers.
How long do I have to wait after “too many attempts”?
TikTok does not publish an exact time, and the limit usually lifts after a while. Switching to a new number is often faster than waiting.
Can I still log in to a TikTok account registered with a temporary number?
Yes, as long as you have linked an email and password, you can log in with email. If only the temporary number is linked, you will not be able to complete SMS verification once the number is recycled, so link an email as soon as possible.
Can TikTok and Douyin use the same number?
They are two separate apps with separate account systems. Douyin is aimed at users in mainland China and usually requires a mainland China number, so confirm which app you need before ordering.
Can I sign up for TikTok without a phone number?
Yes. TikTok supports signing up with an email address, so a phone number is not always required. However, some security checks or specific features may still ask you to verify a phone number, and you can prepare one then.
