Google verification code not received? A phone verification guide for Gmail sign-up
Not getting the SMS code when creating a Google account or signing in on a new device? Work through the causes, understand Google's common messages, and learn how to receive a Google code with a virtual number.
When you create a Google account for Gmail, YouTube and other services, or sign in on a new device, Google often asks you to verify a phone number. If the SMS never arrives, the cause is usually the number format, repeated requests or the number itself. This guide lists the common causes and troubleshooting steps first, then explains what Google’s most common messages mean, and finally covers what to keep in mind when using a virtual number.
Common causes
- Wrong number format: the wrong country code is selected, or the domestic prefix 0 is typed again after the country code.
- Too many requests: tapping “Resend” many times in a short period can make Google stop sending codes to that number.
- Number not accepted: Google rejects some number ranges, and the page says the number cannot be used for verification.
- Number used too many times: when a number has already verified many accounts, Google may stop accepting it.
Troubleshooting steps
- Check the country and country code, and keep only the digits of the number itself.
- Wait one or two minutes instead of resending again and again.
- Make sure no VPN or proxy is changing your network location, then refresh the page and try again.
- If the code still does not arrive, cancel the order and try another country or number.
Understanding Google’s common messages
“This phone number cannot be used for verification”
This message means Google has rejected the number; it is not a delivery failure. Waiting or resending will not help. Switch to another number right away, ideally from a different country.
“You have tried too many times”
This is a rate limit. It can appear when you request codes many times in a short period from the same device or network. Stop for a while, then try again with a new number, and do not keep tapping after the message appears.
Being asked to send an SMS from your phone
In some cases Google asks you to send a text message from the number to Google, instead of Google sending you a code. A temporary number can only receive SMS and cannot send them, so if you see this method, go back to check whether other verification options are available, or use your own number instead.
Receiving a Google code with a virtual number
On the Google SMS page you can see stock and prices by country. US numbers usually have plenty of stock, and you can compare them on the US virtual number page. When choosing, keep these points in mind:
- Prefer countries with more stock: more stock means more numbers to choose from, so it is easier to switch to a working number if one is rejected.
- Match your network region: a number from a country very different from your current network region can trigger extra checks.
- Handle one account at a time: do not register several accounts in a row from the same network; that triggers security checks more easily than the number itself.
What to do after signing up
A temporary number is recycled when it expires, and you will not be able to use it for Google codes again. After signing up, complete these steps in your Google Account security settings as soon as possible:
- Add a recovery email: make it your main way to recover the account.
- Turn on 2-Step Verification: use an authenticator app or a passkey instead of relying on SMS.
- Update your recovery phone: if you will need SMS recovery later, switch to a number you can keep long term.
No code when signing in to an existing account
If you are signing in to an existing Google account on a new device and the SMS does not arrive, choose “Try another way” on the verification page. Google usually lists other options, such as tapping a prompt on a phone where you are already signed in, entering a backup code, or sending a code to your recovery email. If the account was linked to a temporary number that has since been recycled, these are the only ways left to sign in, which is exactly why you should add a recovery email and 2-Step Verification soon after signing up.
FAQ
Do I need a phone number to create a Google account?
Not always. Some sign-up flows let you skip the phone number, but Google decides whether verification is required based on factors such as your device and network. If the page does not offer a skip option, you need to complete phone verification.
How many Google accounts can one number verify?
Google does not publish an exact number. The more accounts a number has verified, the more likely it is to be rejected, so we recommend using a different number for each account.
Am I charged if the code does not arrive?
Orders that have not received an SMS can be cancelled, and the held amount returns to your balance according to the order rules.
Why are several different numbers all rejected?
If numbers from several different countries in a row are all reported as unusable for verification, the problem may not be the numbers but that Google considers your current device or network higher risk. Try a different network, use a device you normally use, or clear your browser data before trying again, and avoid registering repeatedly in a short period.
If you run into problems, check the Help center first, and follow Google’s terms of service.
