WhatsApp code not received? A step-by-step fix and when to switch numbers

· 5 min read

Work through number format, resend timing, network and device settings, and number status to fix a missing WhatsApp 6-digit code, plus when to switch numbers and which country to pick.

WhatsApp uses your phone number as your account ID, and it sends a 6-digit SMS code whenever you sign up or log in on a new phone. A code that never arrives is one of the most common problems WhatsApp users run into. The good news is that most cases can be solved by checking things in a fixed order. Below we cover the most common causes first, then explain when to give up on the current number and switch to another one.

Check that the number is entered correctly

WhatsApp asks you to choose a country first and then enter the number. A common mistake is entering the country code twice, for example choosing +1 and then typing 1 again before the number, or keeping the leading 0 used for domestic calls. Check and submit again.

  • Enter only the number itself: the country code comes from the drop-down menu, so the number field needs only the remaining digits.
  • Remove the leading 0: mobile numbers in countries such as the UK and Germany start with 0 domestically, but the 0 must be dropped in international format.
  • Check the number of digits: if the length is wrong, WhatsApp may not show an error, but the SMS will never arrive.

Mind the resend interval

WhatsApp limits how often the same number can request a code. Tapping “Resend SMS” many times in a short period can trigger a “try again later” message, and the waiting time gets longer each time. We recommend:

  1. After submitting once, wait patiently for the countdown to finish.
  2. When the countdown ends, choose “Resend SMS” or “Call me” and try once more.
  3. Do not keep switching devices or reinstalling the app.

If you already see a very long waiting time, switching to another number is often faster than waiting for the countdown.

Check your network and device

  • Turn off any VPN or proxy and try again, because some network setups interfere with verification requests.
  • Make sure the app is up to date; old versions may fail to complete verification.
  • Turn airplane mode on and off once to refresh the network connection.
  • Make sure the device date and time are set automatically, since a wrong clock can also make verification fail.

Is the number itself usable?

If the code still does not arrive after several attempts, the number may be restricted by WhatsApp or already registered to another account. Switching numbers is then more effective than retrying.

Common signs of a restricted number

  • Immediate error: right after you submit the number, WhatsApp says it cannot be used, without ever reaching the code screen.
  • Unusual waiting time: the very first request already shows a long waiting time.
  • No SMS at all: the countdown ends several times, and neither an SMS nor a call arrives.

Which country to choose when switching

Countries with plenty of stock usually receive codes more easily. The WhatsApp SMS page lists stock and prices by country; if you mainly use WhatsApp in the UK, you can also compare on the UK virtual number page. A number from a country very different from your network location can trigger extra checks, so when you switch, a nearby region is often a better choice.

What to keep in mind when registering WhatsApp with a temporary number

A temporary number can receive SMS only during the order’s validity period. WhatsApp will send a code again whenever you log in on a new device or reinstall the app, and once the number has been recycled you will not be able to receive it. So:

  1. After registering, turn on two-step verification in Settings and set a 6-digit PIN.
  2. If the app offers email verification, add your email address.
  3. Back up your chats regularly so you do not lose data when changing phones.
  4. For an account you plan to keep long term, switch it to your own number as soon as you can.

Keep your order details

If the order times out without an SMS, note the order ID, the time and the order status, then get help through the Help center. Orders that have not received an SMS can be cancelled, and the held amount returns to your balance according to the order rules. Verification codes are for your own use only; never share them with anyone.

FAQ

How long does a WhatsApp code usually take?

Normally the SMS arrives within a minute or two. If nothing has arrived when the countdown ends, waiting longer rarely helps; work through the checks above or simply switch to another number.

Does “Call me” help?

If you are using your own number, a voice call is an alternative to SMS and may get through more easily when the signal is weak. If you are using a temporary number, the order page shows only SMS content, so choose to resend the SMS.

What if a new number still gets no code?

If numbers from two or three different countries in a row all fail, the problem is more likely your device or network: check the app version, turn off the VPN and confirm your time settings, then try again. You can also check the order status and refunds in the Help center.

How many WhatsApp accounts can one number register?

One phone number can be linked to only one WhatsApp account at a time. If the number was used for another account before, verifying it on a new device logs out the old one, so WhatsApp may treat such numbers more cautiously. Once the code arrives, finish registering as soon as possible.
