Tinder phone verification: how to sign up, and what to know before using a temporary number

· 5 min read

Tinder requires phone verification to sign up. Learn the sign-up process, why codes sometimes do not arrive, and why you should add another sign-in method soon after registering with a temporary number.

Tinder asks you to verify a phone number when you sign up, and it sends another SMS code whenever you log in with that number later. So while a temporary number is convenient for registering, you need to plan ahead for how you will log in afterwards. This guide covers Tinder’s sign-up process, how to troubleshoot a missing code, and how to keep your account after registering with a temporary number.

What to know before you sign up

  • Login depends on SMS: every time you log in to Tinder with a phone number you need a code, and once a temporary number expires you can no longer receive it.
  • Add an email: link an email address in settings after signing up so you can recover your account.
  • Match your region: a number from the same country as your location reduces extra verification.

Besides a phone number, Tinder also supports logging in with accounts such as Google and Apple. If you plan to log in with one of those, phone verification is just one step of sign-up; if you plan to keep logging in by phone number, a temporary number is not a good fit.

Sign-up steps

  1. Open Tinder, choose to sign up with a phone number and enter the number.
  2. Enter the SMS code, then complete your profile and photos.
  3. Link an email in settings so you can recover the account by email later.
  4. Complete photo verification if you like; it makes your profile more trustworthy and lowers the chance of the account being flagged as unusual.

What if the code does not arrive?

If no SMS arrives after you tap send, check these in order:

  • Check the country code and number, and do not enter the country code or the leading 0 twice.
  • Wait for the countdown to finish before resending; repeated requests in a short time may be limited.
  • Turn off any VPN that changes your network location, and make sure the app is up to date.
  • If the code still does not arrive, cancel the order and try a country or number with plenty of stock.

Receiving a Tinder code with a virtual number

Check stock and prices by country on the Tinder SMS page; if you use Tinder in the UK, you can pick a number on the UK virtual number page. If you are not yet familiar with how temporary numbers work, read What is an SMS verification service? first.

How the number’s region relates to your location

Tinder recommends people near you based on your location. A number from a country far from your location can trigger extra verification and can also make the account look unnatural. Choose a number from the country you are actually in; for example, if you use Tinder in the UK, pick a UK number.

Keeping your account after signing up

A temporary number can receive SMS only during the order’s validity period. So that you can still log in later, do the following soon after signing up:

  • Add an email: link and verify an email address in your account settings as your main way to recover the account.
  • Link a third-party login: if the app offers it, connect a Google or Apple account and use it to log in later.
  • Switch to a long-term number: if you plan to use Tinder long term, change the phone number in settings to your own.

Safety tips after signing up

Dating apps involve meeting people offline and sharing personal information, so beyond account security, look after your own safety too. When using Tinder, we recommend:

  • Do not share your phone number, home address or financial details in chats, especially with people you have just met.
  • Be wary of anyone who asks you to send money, share a verification code or click an unfamiliar link; such requests are very likely scams.
  • Meet in a public place the first time, and tell a friend about your plans in advance.

In particular, refuse anyone who asks for a verification code: once someone else has the code, they may be able to take over your account.

FAQ

How many digits is a Tinder code?

Usually 6 digits, and it expires after a while. If you request several codes, only the latest one is valid.

Can I sign up for Tinder without a phone number?

You can sign up with accounts such as Google or Apple, but Tinder may still ask you to verify a phone number during sign-up or login; follow the prompts in the app at the time.

Can I still log in after the temporary number expires?

If you have linked an email or a third-party account, you can log in with that. If you rely only on the phone number, you will not receive login codes once it expires.

Why was I asked to verify again soon after signing up?

Changing devices often, a change in network region, or a profile that clearly does not match your location can all trigger re-verification. Keeping your device and location stable reduces this.

Can I change my Tinder phone number to my own?

Yes. Find your phone number in Tinder’s settings, enter the new number as prompted and complete SMS verification. After the change, future login codes are sent to the new number.
