Receiving verification codes with a US phone number: how to choose and what to watch for

· 4 min read

Why many platforms prefer US numbers, the US number format and how to enter it, what to check when choosing a US virtual number to receive SMS, and answers to common questions.

Why US numbers are a common choice

Many international platforms treat US +1 numbers as their main sign-up scenario, deliver SMS to them more reliably, and usually have more of them in stock. If you need to receive codes for international apps, a US number is often one of the first choices. Still, a US number does not work on every platform; understanding the number format and how to choose improves your chances of success on the first try.

US number format

  • Country code: the US country code is +1, shared with Canada and some Caribbean countries.
  • Number length: +1 is followed by 10 digits; the first 3 are the area code and the last 7 are the subscriber number.
  • How to enter it: after selecting the United States in the app, enter only the 10 digits, do not type 1 again, and use digits only.

Because the US and Canada share +1, some apps decide which country a number belongs to based on the area code. If an app requires a US number, make sure the country selected in your order is the United States.

What to look at when choosing

  • Stock and price: numbers with more stock are more likely to receive the code within the validity period; prices change with stock and platform.
  • Platform compatibility: a number does not work for every platform, so first check the relevant service page to see whether the country is in stock.
  • Country code format: the US country code is +1, so do not type 1 again when entering the number.

The US virtual number page shows availability and reference prices for each platform in the US.

Apps commonly registered with US numbers

  • Accounts and tools: for example Google accounts, AI tools and developer platforms, which usually support US numbers well.
  • Messaging apps: for example Telegram and WhatsApp, where US numbers are a common sign-up choice.
  • Social and content platforms: most social, video and community apps aimed at global users support sign-up with US numbers.

Keep in mind that some services aimed only at local US users, such as banking, payment or carrier-related apps, may also require local identity information, and temporary numbers are not suitable for them.

About “free numbers”

Free US numbers posted publicly online are usually shared by large numbers of users, so codes may be seen by others, and platforms reject them more often. When account security matters, a paid temporary number reserved for you is the better choice: each order’s number belongs only to that order. How it works

  1. On the service page, choose the platform to verify and a US number.
  2. Enter the number on the platform to trigger the SMS.
  3. Read the code on the order page and enter it on the platform.
  4. If nothing arrives in time, follow the order rules and do not trigger repeated sends.

FAQ

How do I tell US and Canadian numbers apart?

Both use +1 and are distinguished by the 3-digit area code. Most users do not need to remember area codes; just make sure the country you choose when ordering is the United States.

Can a US number receive codes from every platform?

That cannot be guaranteed. Each platform has its own rules for accepting numbers, and the same number may work on one platform and be rejected on another. Before ordering, check the relevant service page to confirm US stock.

Can I keep the number long term?

No. A temporary number receives SMS only during the order’s validity period and is recycled afterwards. For accounts you will keep, link an email or switch to your own number after verification.

What if the code does not arrive?

First check that you did not type 1 twice, then wait for the countdown to finish. If the code still does not arrive, cancel the order and try another US number or a number from another country.

If the code does not arrive, check the Help center first. Please follow each platform’s terms and use numbers only for lawful purposes.
